Why Andrea Skinner’s Resigned from Hockey?
The position of interim head of the Hockey Canada Board of Directors was vacated by Andrea Skinner, who subsequently announced her departure.
According to a report by CTV News, she left the company as the issue over the manner in which the organization handled reports of physical attacks grew.
The troubled national sports organization made the announcement on Saturday night that Skinner intended to stand down from his roles as chair and a board member.
The national organization, Hockey Canada, has recently lost further corporate sponsors and provincial groups, which has led to her impending departure from the organization.
In November of 2020, Skinner became a member of the board of directors for Hockey Canada in the capacity of a volunteer. She had just been serving in the role of temporary chair for over two months when outgoing board chairman Michael Brind’Amour tendered his resignation on August 6.
In a statement that was released by Hockey Canada on Saturday, Skinner expressed her appreciation for the fact that the members of the organization had selected her to serve on the board and given her the opportunity to contribute to the overall development of the sport as well as Hockey Canada.
Since it came to light in May that Hockey Canada had reached a confidential deal with a woman who had filed a lawsuit seeking $3.55 million alleging that eight players had sexually abused her, the organization has been under fire ever since the news broke.
In the month of July, allegations of gang abuse against the World Junior Team from 2003 began to surface, as reported by sportsnet.ca. There has been no evidence presented in court that supports any of the assertions.
In the course of the investigations carried out by government officials and the media into the manner in which Hockey Canada managed the 2018 claims, it was discovered that the organization had maintained two distinct funds for the purpose of covering the settlement of allegations.
In response to the claims, the federal government has pulled its financial support for Hockey Canada, and a number of the organization’s most significant sponsors have either put their relations to the national sports organization on hold or severed them entirely.
When Skinner was invited to testify before members of Parliament via video alongside Brind’Amour in a hearing of the Canadian Heritage standing committee in Ottawa earlier this week, she aggressively supported Hockey Canada’s executives. Brind’Amour was also present at the meeting.
Throughout the entirety of the hearing that took place on Tuesday, she emphasized the point that hockey shouldn’t be used as a “scapegoat” or “centerpiece” for a toxic culture that exists in other parts of society.

Although she continued to be actively involved in the sport after she completed her studies at Cornell, her days as a competitive player came to an end when she left the university.
She started officiating games at the same time that she was attending law school at the University of Ottawa, where she was also working as a coach for the women’s hockey team.
Andrea was a partner at the law firm Aird & Berlis LLP in Toronto, where she also served as the chair of the committee for diversity and inclusion and worked with the company’s municipal and land use planning group. In addition, Andrea was a member of the business’s executive committee.
